Original Photo found here Ladies, you know what I am talking about. It's the face we relax into when by ourselves, or when scorning at a greasy Garcon's pass. It's the stance set when waiting for someone at a meeting point or waiting in line at the post office, it is the Arms Crossed (b**ch) Mean Face. It's a mystery but it's something that has overtaken us all as a gender. In the past I have been shouted at from across the way "Cheer up Love, things can't be that bad", definitely more than once. The arms folding across are our subconscious barriers, my bitch face now natural through years of discouraging skeezy men trying to talk to me; they are all results of a fear, and self protection. In my years at University I studied the importance of non verbal communication and it still plays an importance to life everyday. Through our facial expressions and posture we say so many things without opening our mouths. It's interesting as there is a difference between the way we are feeling, the impression we want to project and what we are actually projecting. So in terms of "Arms Crossed Mean Face", we want to project strength, we are most likely feeling vulnerable and we actually just project being a miserable bitch. Now no one finds miserable bitch empowering or strong and it bites us in the bum as you attract more attention from the folk who tell you to "Cheer up, love". I have also read that even though our sub conscious affects our body language and facial expressions, our body language and facial expressions actually, in turn affect our thoughts and feelings. What a mind trip! There was a study via Ted Talks by Amy Cuddy that showed when you display more 'confident' power poses our chemical levels in our body change to align with the pose. So for example, crossing your arms is a low power pose and increases your stress hormones, and standing tall, smiling and relaxed increases your power hormone. There is so much to process here, but I think it is worth looking into as I know that if we can use this information positively, we can manage our own body language and it may help us in our future relationships and work situations. And importantly for me, get less randoms shouting life advice at me! Haha. What do you guys think? Are you victims of "Arms Crossed Mean Face" too?
