I was on The Man Repeller blog today which is pretty cool, and funny (www.manrepeller.com) and I saw these super cute Lovebird Bracelets from Anarchy Street (www.anarchystreet.com) which is an American based store...and have sold out of this product :( Struck by a sudden desperation to own it or something similar I thought, I can make one! So I did. I had a quick lunch break from work and shuffled down to Soho to a Fashion Jewellery supplier and bought... a ring, a brooch, a silver chain and some fasteners. I chose the owl ring (£3) because...who doesn't like them? No one, exactly! They are universally adorable, and the brooch (£2.50) seemed to go with it and remind me of feathers so I opted for that one. The plain chain was £2. So back at my desk and armed with my trinkets and a pair of scissors I first layed out where all the pieces would rest on my hand. (Note, if making this remember to measure when you bend your fingers too.) Now that you have all your measurements of your chain lengths (one for the bracelet and the other to attach the ring to the brooch) get the piece for the bracelet and attach to loops on either end and the fasten them to the two edges of the brooch pin. Depending on what type of ring you decide to buy, it will determine how you attach the chain to it, try and keep this in mind when buying the ring, or if skilled enough you could probably get away with super glueing a ring fastener somewhere. Behind the owl face and ring there was two little gaps that allowed me thread the chain in to secure it. Now you have the fun part of attaching the ring and the bracelet together. Add another chain loop to the end of the ring chain and attach it together with one of the edges of the brooch. This creates a sort of lop sided affect which works for my peice but you may need to play about with positioning depending on what makes up your own one. Once the two are attached then BOOM! You have your very own Ringclet or Bring...or just plain old simple Ring and Bracelet. Now I leave you with more photos of me just enjoying my new bling!
I went to this on my lunchbreak today.... The Coninsby Gallery is right round the corner from the office I work at and numerous times I have walked past this little store front meaning to go in, but never had. Prior to this exhibition they have held other great collections but for some reason or another I never went in. So what made me break this habit... David White's Americana series! For the Sucker I am for bright colours and anything termed 'Americana' this was perfect for me. His paintings were so beautiful to see up close. The stroke or the brush and the build of the paint were all important to the final image. I actually fell in love with his image of an American Indian on paper, from what I believe to be using water colour, I'm a starer in general but I was actually ridiculous looking at it. Described as Modern Contemporary Pop art style it didn't suprise me that Dave White had created work for Nike, and was a pioneer in the whole Sneaker Art movement.
The exhibition runs until next week and I urge you to pop by to see it, especially if you are in the area. I will be back there maybe tomorrow or next tuesday...they have some sticker prints for sale including the one piece I really like...so basically, IT WILL BE MINE! Dave White: http://www.davewhiteart.com/ www.coningsbygallery.com Photo: JR, Les Bosquets ghetto, Montfermeil (93) - 2004 Lame title to a blog post I know, I apologize. However I was trying to find something to convey the substance attached to the work of Parisian artist 'JR', and that his work isn't just your plain and standard visual offering. The more I read about him and consumed all his work via, photos, videos and articles the more my heart danced and my stomach pulsed. What an affect that is, but it is all true. The thing is, behind every image and every exhibition, there is a point, there is a cause...and that is what is inspiring. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival is hitting London next week and now is the time to start booking your tickets. Having seen the UK Premier of Crude two years ago there, (a film about Chevron(Texaco) and their contribution to polluting the Ecuadorian water systems, causing sicknesses and cancers) I do urge you to catch a viewing of one of the many films showing, spreading over numerous subject matters and social injustice issues. Two that I have already booked to see is 'A small Act' which I put the trailer of it above, and the second is a documentary called 'Lost Angels' depicting the lives of the LA homeless, where in Los Angeles you find the greatest number of homless living on the streets in the western world. This one I am looking forward too the most as first hand I have seen, the issue of homlessness in LA on a recent trip where groups of people congragate the streets and even post up tents on the sidewalk. However, one thing that touched my heart is actually how friendly some were to us and came and chatted to us when we were getting into my friends apartment, and warmed us with a smile everytime we came and left their building.
Listings and tickets can be found on this website: http://www.hrw.org/en/iff/london , and if you are not from London UK, no need to fret as the festival screens world wide, and listings for that can be found on the link too. Perks of working at an ad agency, you get to see many creative campaigns. Just from the sites we tend to visit at work I came across these amazing ads from Design agency, Moma Propaganda. They created ad campaigns for Social Networking sites Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Skype using 50s style illustration and editorial.
I know last year I posted about Art documentary 'Beautiful Losers' which showed the world of the top Skater/Artists and the world they lived in. Well, Ad company Wieden and Kennedy have a creative entertainment section on their site featuring independent content, short films and shows. The producers of Beautiful Losers and now behind a series called 'D.I.Y America', short clips following and exploring the world of Street and Skate art.
There are 11 episodes so far, so enjoy and get creative! Sometimes I am torn between the love of the art when it comes to grafitti and my need for rules and laws to be followed, which obviously illegal tagging doesn't adhere too! So I thought this was brilliant when I saw this...art pieces created on Cling Film! This is an interesting new canvas, temporary but still quite striking, and looks quite fun. I saw this posted on an advertising blog and they mentioned this may be a neat new way to promote things on events, be part of the entertainment at some functions. Either way this video will bring a little smile and your face and if not for the art itself but for the reactions of the people passing by. have wanted to post about The Beautiful Losers movie for some time now, but I actually only got round to watching it myself 2 weeks ago after owning it since Christmas. This is the kind of movie that will inspire you, give you a sense of confidence in your own creativity and hopefully slightly give you that push to chase and pursue the thing you most want in your career. My good friend Natasha recommended this film about a group of skate art kids who created art at a time when no one was really interested in them, but after just living life, creating for themselves and their peers, the Art Industry started to take notice. The Documentary follows such names Ed Templeton, Shepard Fairey and Margaret Kilgallen from their youth to the early 2000s when the film was released. It follows their careers when they were poor and broke to a time when they are showing at Galleries around the world or now in positions in companies as Art Directors or commissioned for big projects. Peek the trailer, it's a sweet film and the items featured are all great and feature a wide spread of mediums. I grabbed mine off Amazon, one for the DVD collection for sure. :) All images taken from Google Images The older I get the more I am revealed to the origins of things that have been part of my culture and environment of the past 23 years. Cue, Mr Norman Rockwell (February 3, 1894 – November 8, 1978), American Painter andI Illustrator extraordinaire. I have seen his paintings, and illustrations on numerous things, or other pieces based so heavenly on his style. Even a recent front cover of Rolling Stones with the cast of Glee, and a similar one with the cast of Friends was based on his work (actually, I can across the name of painter while reading some random blog about those magazine covers.) So I began sifting through his work and more things just became familar, and the ones that weren't were just great to look at anyway. I really like his style. He truly created, and defined a style all his own and has achieved the thing that many artists crave to achieve to, that on one look of a painting, their name would spring to mind. A notoriety that will truly go down in history.
His life was art, born to be an artist, and had a career as one from a teen. At 14 years old he was pulled out of school to go to Art school, as his talent was undeniable and needed to be developed. He was contributing to National Mags at 17 and he received the title of Art Editor for Boy's Life magazine at only 19. In his early twenties he wanted to enlist to the Army, and his initial attempt was rejected as he was too thin, and over a day due to his determination to go on tour he shoved his face with Milk, Bananas and donuts and though he managed to make weight and was accepted, they posted him as Army Artist for his whole time there, and never saw any action. Predestined no doubt. Due to his long career his work was inspired by so many different things, like the youth and joviality of Childhood, quiet town life and then the war. He was commisioned a series called Four Freedoms depicting the freedoms outlined in a speech from President Franklin Roosevelt, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom From Want and Freedom From Fear. They were outlined as the things needed to be protected and the motivations for Americans fight in World War II. Wikipedia it. I decided to blog about him, as I just love his work and wanted other people to enjoy and discover him too. This life is so full of amazing creativity and it's such a blessing to reap the fruits of other's work in terms of visual enjoyment. So who are your favourite Artists that you we should all check out? It may even be your own work of one of a friend, I would love to see. Share them on the comments! |
