Guten Tag! A trip with the girl squad

We set off for a 4 day long weekend in Berlin, Germany a few weeks back.  I had wanted to visit there for a while and so myself, my sister Tel, gal pals Rhi and Yemi decided to go.  It was a girls trip as the husband was going there two weeks after on a stag.  We set off on a Thursday morning from Gatwick nearly missing our flight as we didn't notice it was time to board until 10 mins after the gate was meant to close(!) flew for two hours and landed in Schönefeld Airport.  This airport is only a few miles from the centre and has train links direct into town.  We grabbed a cab to our Air Bnb in Kreuzberg which was a good location to nearby bars and restaurants.

In all honesty I didn't do much prepping or research about where to go and what to do.  The night before I quickly skimmed the DesignLoveFest blog's Berlin travel guide and jotted down a few recommendations from people who had been before but usually I would have more of a concrete itinerary...however it is good it wing it sometimes right?  As there were four of us we made sure there was at least one site we each wanted to check out, and they were the Street Food night at Markt Halle Neun, Eastside Gallery, Tempelhofer Feld and The memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe by Peter Eisenman.

True to form we also visited many nice cafes and bars, and on the Saturday night we watched the England vs Russia footy match in a German pub with a bunch of other English blokes!  Some standouts for me were:

Umami in Kreuzberg
Zollpackhof to watch the footy and eat Bratwurzt mit pommes
Mustafa Gemuse Kebab recommended by Tel and Yemi
Paloma Bar, cool little hidden bar but be warn, people smoke like chimneys in there!
Roamers for coffee and brunch which was tasty BUT took sooo long for the food to come, we waited an hour!

Berlin is quite spread out and we didn't find one particular area or street that had a line of bars we could pop into and when we did it was all pretty mellow.  However it did not stop us one night staying up until 7am making friends with random people while sitting outside an old man bar not realising the sun came up.

Here are some photos, taken by myself and Rhi!

Berlin really is a night time place.  After sightseeing we would go back to the flat, have naps and then head back out around 11pm to have drinks and search for a dance.  We found plenty of drinks but not that much dancing.  Some of the areas we found ourselves in for the wee hours were Kottbusser tor, Weserstraße and Schlesisches tor.

I am going to have to give a little special attention to Modulor  an art supply emporium in Moritzplatz.  It was like a candy store for creatives with crafts, stationery, paints...you name it, they had it!

Saturday night through to Sunday morning we stayed out too late and only managed to get 2 hours sleep before we had to leave our Air BnB but we had a few more hours to go around some more before our flight.  Unfortunately being so tired and worse for wear we only managed to get our butts to Tempelhof Feld, the old Airport that is now open as a public park.  It was actually such a cool place and if I didn't feel so groggy at the time would have taken more pictures.  They even had a disused rail way, MY FAVOURITE!  However as you can see below we took naps.  Haha.

I will leave you with this photo of Yemi...you see after getting on our plane home and waiting 2 hours due to delays, it got cancelled and we got kicked off and had to stay until Tuesday!!!  Hahaha, but that is another story to tell another day.
