The Beautiful Losers

have wanted to post about The Beautiful Losers movie for some time now, but I actually only got round to watching it myself 2 weeks ago after owning it since Christmas.  This is the kind of movie that will inspire you, give you a sense of confidence in your own creativity and hopefully slightly give you that push to chase and pursue the thing you most want in your career.  My good friend Natasha recommended this film about a group of skate art kids who created art at a time when no one was really interested in them, but after just living life, creating for themselves and their peers, the Art Industry started to take notice.

The Documentary follows such names Ed Templeton, Shepard Fairey and Margaret Kilgallen from their youth to the early 2000s when the film was released.  It follows their careers when they were poor and broke to a time when they are showing at Galleries around the world or now in positions in companies as Art Directors or commissioned for big projects.

Peek the trailer, it's a sweet film and the items featured are all great and feature a wide spread of mediums.  I grabbed mine off Amazon, one for the DVD collection for sure.

Norman Rockwell...Rocks?

The older I get the more I am revealed to the origins of things that have been part of my culture and environment of the past 23 years.  Cue, Mr Norman Rockwell (February 3, 1894 – November 8, 1978), American Painter andI Illustrator extraordinaire.  I have seen his paintings, and illustrations on numerous things, or other pieces based so heavenly on his style.  Even a recent front cover of Rolling Stones with the cast of Glee, and a similar one with the cast of Friends was based on his work (actually, I can across the name of painter while reading some random blog about those magazine covers.)  So I began sifting through his work and more things just became familar, and the ones that weren't were just great to look at anyway.  I really like his style.  He truly created, and defined a style all his own and has achieved the thing that many artists crave to achieve to, that on one look of a painting, their name would spring to mind.  A notoriety that will truly go down in history.

His life was art, born to be an artist, and had a career as one from a teen.  At 14 years old he was pulled out of school to go to Art school, as his talent was undeniable and needed to be developed.  He was contributing to National Mags at 17 and he received the title of Art Editor for Boy's Life magazine at only 19.  In his early twenties he wanted to enlist to the Army, and his initial attempt was rejected as he was too thin, and over a day due to his determination to go on tour he shoved his face with Milk, Bananas and donuts and though he managed to make weight and was accepted, they posted him as Army Artist for his whole time there, and never saw any action.  Predestined no doubt.

Due to his long career his work was inspired by so many different things, like the youth and joviality of Childhood, quiet town life and then the war.  He was commisioned a series called Four Freedoms depicting the freedoms outlined in a speech from President Franklin Roosevelt, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom From Want and Freedom From Fear.  They were outlined as the things needed to be protected and the motivations for Americans fight in World War II.  Wikipedia it.

I decided to blog about him, as I just love his work and wanted other people to enjoy and discover him too.  This life is so full of amazing creativity and it's such a blessing to reap the fruits of other's work in terms of visual enjoyment.

So who are your favourite Artists that you we should all check out?  It may even be your own work of one of a friend, I would love to see.  Share them on the comments!

I put up a new TASSLE Tee on the products page...

I made it after being inspired by a Top that looked similar from American Apparel but it was like £50!!!  So I got creative and made my own.  After making a very successful black one loads of people were asking me about it and to make them one, so in that I have made ONE...in a lovely blue!  And only at £20.  So email me at: info@thebamboodistrict.com if you want it.

I thought I would never see the day when I would feature, let alone slightly applaud the likes of Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian on my blog.  Though this past week in numerous Celeb mags and sites there were features on the whole 'revealing the realities of Airbrushing' thing.  I think most of the magazine and media ingesting public know already that all images featured in publications and videos are indeed photoshopped to some degree or another to make the subjects more aesthetically pleasing or uniform.  Above we can see a released shoot from Complex magazine featuring Kim where digitally she has been sucked, tucked and smoothed out on top of her A-list make up, wardrobe and lighting.

Obviously she looked amazing in the original photo, but I guess the issue is WHY there feels to be this need of extensive photoshopping to perfection.  I could even personally admit, a little tweaking with the spot healing tool on my CS3, playing around with curves and hues on my Facebook profile pics and I'm just a random member of the public!  I think it comes down to what we want to portray ourselves as and to the most part, it is all quite a bit fake.  However!  I am not actually not that adverse to Photoshopping as a whole.  I really think there is a difference to a shoot like the one above, where they are obviously featuring Kim Kardashian as a personality, a real human being...but presenting her in a package that is not really her, to say a highly art directed editorial photo ad or full fashion feature in Vogue where a nameless model is dressed in full costume amongst an elaborate backdrop.  The reason why I find these things different is the image as a whole, when the highly photoshopped image is seen a sense of fiction is carried along with it, the fact that a model is clad in that season's key pieces in the middle of the snowy antarctic riding on a penguin is pretty absurd and you can't really relate to it.  However, when you see a 'celebrity' or a regular person being featured in a way that is supposed to be 'real' but is actually manipulated then that carries more fallacy, and all the insecurities of most of the female population is heightened as a result.  The fact that Complex felt the need the take inches off Kim in the pic above, hide the cellulite and make her a little fairer highlights their desire to present her in their preferred way, ans that's the danger.

I think the way forward is not just showing more images of un-airbrushed people in features, but just putting out the fact that media images aren't real, and showing more post-release images of standard used images.  Then the magic will disappear in most people's consciousness, and maybe the ad execs will start taking it in to consideration.  For now I just hope that most people who end up reading this post KNOW the truth behind these pictures and there is no way to compare, not that you should anyway.

Check out some similar pics of Britney below and a quite well known ad from DOVE in regards to this too!

I went to the Cornish Coast.

Brrrr...it was cold.  Yeeeaaah...it was fun.

Though I am used to the tropical Oceans of the Philippines I can't deny how fun this was.  Cornwall is beautiful, and if you ever have a chance to visit you should all go!  The Cornish Ice Cream was so good, and though the water was freakishly cold, the heavens opened up and blessed us with so much sunshine.  I attempted to top up my tan but failed.

Enjoy the snaps, spot the Bamboo.  There are still some Tee's available in the Products section!

Ps, Horse and Hound part of the trip to follow soon...

Totally having a girl crush moment...

I guess due to hours of skimming Fashion sites and blogs you come across editorials with beautiful clothes and locations,  but you are also exposed to GORGEOUS world of models!   Here are some of my faves.
Picture

Sessilee Lopez is crazy gorgeous (left middle) and Arlenis Sosa (right) is so cute.  Chanel and Jordon are undeniably stunning too!

My personal favourite!  Lakshmi Menon.  So much so that she gets two pics!

Filipina representation!  Charo Ronquillo.  She mostly features in teen publications or Asian editorials.  I saw one pic of her and she looked so much like my Mama when she was younger.

Crystal Renn is one of the world's most beautiful women in my eyes, and she just happens to be a Plus Size Model!  No need to be super stick to be a model, and I read an interview with her recently and SHE GET'S PAID, haaaay.

Old lady me.

So at the beginning of the year I wrote how I was on a new clothes ban?  Well recently I was feeling itchy...I walked through the racks of Topshop and a part of me just wanted to pull out my Debit Card and purchase a cropped tee...but I didn't.

Then, what I am sure is the good Lord trying to encourage me in this feat sent me an Angel in the form of an old lady, well actually my Uncle's neighbour...
Picture
Ok, well this actually isn't her but I thought the image was cute.

So basically the whole Family scuttled over to Pimlico for Easter Monday lunch and then my Uncle announces to the females at the table...'HELP YOURSELVES', and he wasn't talking about the food, we devoured that already.  So off we rushed, with my middle sister using her ducking and diving skills of nab a great 80's detailed black sweater and the older one finding a cute jumper with umbrellas on it!!!  I managed to snag some wine coloured waisted trousers, some cute pastel sweaters and a tapestry bag (which are everywhere now in Urban Outfitters) with a scene of Paris on it.  There was so much clothes!  The lady who lives above him was doing a clear out and as he was the only fit one in the building gave him the task of sorting it out and getting rid of them, and then he passed the task on to my mama.  So after taking all the best things (as there was a bunch of questionable stuff too) we were left with 2 filled sacks to give to charity.  I literally came back with so many staples and cute pieces it filled any shopping temptations I had.  I wore an outfil to work which was 80% old lady cast offs, and though I do not have a photo of me specifically it kinda looked like this...

Picture
There you go!  Keep an eye out for those OAPs, you never know what treasures they have that they are more than willing to cast off.  Especially if the only old people you know dress like this...
