teen vogue's great feature on these beautiful young models
I used to buy Teen Vogue all the time, even way past my teens into my early-mid twenties. I have written about different shoots and covers before and happily will do again! Their August 2015 cover features the beautiful faces of new black models Imaan Hammam, Aya Jones and Lineisy Montero. They hail from Egypt, Paris and the Dominican Republic respectively. Seeing these girls brings joy to my heart. Slowly in my lifetime I have seen the increase of diversification within the fashion industry of using women of colour but even the diversity within this subsection of models is increasing too. Years ago a friend of mine (who is black herself) moaned why are all the black models just white girls dipped in chocolate? We were looking at a magazine and what she was referring to was the super straight, long weave, slight nose and light eyes of the model and I couldn't help agree. At the time models of colour were either the Naomi Campbells or the Alec Weks gracing the catwalks and pages, and though undoubtedly beautiful these modern Latina, European and North African black models shine another light to the multi faceted beauty within black models.
I too really enjoyed the article that accompanied this photo shoot which I usually never read, you can read it all here. The fashion industry still needs way more work in increasing their use of global models, let alone sizes and heights but if we don't acknowledge and celebrate the little increases then larger changes won't happen either imo.
