Late Feb 2010 will see the launch of her collection which can already be viewed at The People Tree website (www.peopletreeyouth.co.uk) Looks reflect a British sensibility with a colour palette straight from the Union Jack, with even printed Tees with the flag emblazoned on the front. With slight touches of Red, there is colour in the pieces but the base is mostly comprised of greys, navy blues and white. The collection screams Emma’s style, a college student and a national treasure she is able to mix the two looks to make them wearable and not ‘costumey’. Have a look at some of the products. There are clothes for both girls and guys, with the boys’ collection being quite comprehensive.
Hermione Granger, has swapped the wand for the catwalk as seen in her starring campaigns for British fashion force Burberry. However, young Actress Emma Watson is still not content with her dip into the field of fashion but has actually dove in, to the world deeper and collaborated with ethical clothing boutique People Tree to produce a new collection, that not only is youthfully stylish but ethically made too. Though ultimately not my style there are a few sweaters that I like the look of, I like the idea of increasing the volume of ethically made clothes to my wardrobe. The clothes are not ethical purely due to the use of organic cotton and non toxic dyes, but they were manufactured in disadvantaged communities in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, bringing business and sustainable employment. There are more younger people who are consciously aware of their buying choices, and how things deemed quite materialistic and consuming can be purchased in ways that are not causing negative effects to either the environment of people. Fashion Model Lily Cole too has set up an ethical Wool line called the North Circular, and Natalie Portman headed up a line of Vegan shoes for Te Casan. The future is ethical fashion, are you ready to support it?

When you think of a hustler, what images come up in your mind? Is it of those shady ghetto neighborhoods where people stand on the corner selling all sorts, or of the kids that come out to your car trying to sell you gum or a rag cloth. Well, those images will still correlate to a general meaning to the term, but did you know there is something of a 'New Generation' Hustler? Also, the thing is, you, the person who is reading this could probably be called one.
To hustle, in this generation is to work. Work hard for that money, and to work hard to where you want to go. It is mostly an 'Urban' mindset, seen a lot in rappers, producers coming from lack and working to be the best at their game. Working hard not just for general sustainability, but working hard to follow the dream. It is seen too in so many younger people now. Undoubtedly we are living in a time where the majority of people have a sense of obvious creativity about them, or a technological prowess about them. Turn to your left you will bump into an aspiring Graphic designer, swing to the left and you will step on the toes of a fashion student and take a deep breath and you will inhale the scent of a amateur photographer. What sets us apart for the generations before is that now, people so young are more like at 'having a go', 'taking a stab' at things and teach themselves to become the experts. Though I have nothing against formal training, and in some cases it is imperative to have it, but we are now not restricted in developing our 'hobbies' into something that may make some money. Of course we can not all leave our day jobs to become the paid creatives we crave to be, but the lines are now blurring and the professional creative sector is becoming more accessible. However, I do stress, this isn't a get rich, or get ahead quick scheme, the opposite in fact. You will need to work and sacrifice...even harder as we now do it on top of other responsibilities such as full time jobs and studying. Though Bamboo is my love and desire for my career life, I still currently work a 9-5.30pm and it is admittedly difficuly trying to find the time to design, sew, blog, style, photograph and edit....but when I pull off a late night or sacrifice a day of being sociable and produce something I am proud of, AND helps me in selling products then it pays off (in both sense of the term!) I read an article stating that there is an increase in middle-upper class, and University educated people doing a lot more freelance work, and multiple jobs in order to widen their scope and opportunities. It is true, I see it in a lot of my friends who freelance their design skills on top hours in the call center or stacking shelves or friends who fold clothes by day and produce beats in the evening! I am inspired by so many young people doing their thing in the creative industry, Hustling. This phenomena is so culturally apparent that on the American channel HBO, there is a new show called: How to make it big in America, which totally depicts the same thing. Check these kids out who are prime examples of what I am talking about: Julian Gilbert-Art student and budding photographer..used to follow bands around, and now he is being commisioned for jobs for magazines like Nylon, ID and Seventeen. http://juliangilbert.blogspot.com/ KESH- London girl, in America. Writing this post on my lunch break. I'm expecting a bunch of fabric from China in the next week so will get down to some sewing and selling soon. love you all, Nat x You know when you have one of those days when you look at friends, your friendship circle and even the people you are acquaintances with and just take stock in how they play in your lives. Sure we have those friends that maybe we wish we could do without for some reason or another, or that random that you know enough for them to be on your BB list but never actually talk to, but I am sure the majority of the people you would choose to surround yourself with, carry out your life with are people you love and enrich you in some way or another. My tight group of friends are people that I adore, BUT this post isn't even about them...
I have a friend I met over a year ago through Church, we would spot each other around at certain events, hang out and talk about wanting to mix creative talents and careers with humanitarian work. After a few months she moved to Uni to Wales and we spoke less, then last week out of the blue comes an email and she tells me about all the things she has been doing and...its AMAZING!!! While studying her Architecture course she, with a couple of friends founded a non-profit called: ORKIDSTUDIO What Orkidstudio actually is, is an non-profit humanitarian design organization that focus on helping young people and communities, through innovative and sustainable architecture, art and design. They work alongside communities in developing countries to design sustainable infrastructure as well as holding classes and workshop for the children in the villages. They are also developing ideas of creating transient shelters for places that experience sudden physical and political disasters. Please check out their website and see how you can help, even just by spreading awareness. www.orkidstudio.co.uk I am actually so blessed to have people around me that inspire me in what they do in helping the poor and needy. Using skills that they have, and used so commonly in Western world to benefit those with less services available to them. It spurs me on in persevering with what I want to achieve through The Bamboo District and I am glad I have people in my life I can learn from. Nat x THE BAMBOO DISTRICT WISHES YOU A LOVELY VALENTINES DAY Though we celebrate Love today, let us continue it everyday of our lives.
-"Faith, Hope and Love, and the greatest of all these is Love". Adopted babies Orphanage in Port-Au-Prince Photo: Esther Havens My Boyfriend just came back from a 2 week trip to Haiti, he sent with a team that provided medical relief and some food. While he was showing me some of his pictures and footage that will be later made into a small promo to raise more funds, it made me think about how media plays in social awareness. This is the first ever photo I saw taken by Humanitarian Photographer Esther Havens. My friend posted this particular picture via her Twitter and I wad drawn in...and then intrigued to find out more. Esther's is a prime example of someone who is using her creative skill as a means to help and encourage social justice. Her talent is evident in her work, which has taken her across the globe. Partnering with Non-Profits and providing the visual imagery for Campaigns she has provided a Face, a soul...the person behind the many struggles and plights we hear about all the time. As we are continually exposed to so much media relating to these causes we can get desensitized and forget that the people we see, are real. Her pictures not only depict the social and cultural environment in which she is shooting, but captures the character and personality of the people, whether it being deep sorrow behind the eyes or a cheeky smile. Her website is pretty amazing, it stores so many images of her trips that her career has spanned. Have a look yourself at: http://estherhavens.com/This is her 'About Me' Esther Havens is a humanitarian documentary photographer who focuses on social-awareness campaigns with non-profits around the globe, capturing stories that transcend a person's circumstance that reveal the strength of an individual regardless of the situation in which they find themselves. Esther has traveled extensively to over 40 countries and seeks to open hearts and minds to see the third world conditions in a way that might challenge them to make a difference. Her photographs have been displayed in various exhibits across the country. She currently resides in Austin, Texas and New York City and continues to travel on assignment. That pretty sums her up nicely, but seriously, check out her work. It will no doubt leave you inspired and stirred, as it has me. As usual, here are some picks of her pictures that I personally liked. Enjoy. (All images taken from: estherhavens.com) Though late in my greeting, never late in my love.
Happy Birthday to Miss Yolande!!! Great friend, amazing poet, beautiful girl and a huge Bamboo fan. She was of of the first people to buy a dress from me!!! M.I.A has a new single and new video out... I personally love this as I really like everything about her, her music and especially HER STYLE. I think if anyone really rocked that whole western meets tropical vibe and made it a little more mainstream then it is her. From 2005 when she first broke out onto the scene she has still managed to maintain that signiture colourful and tribal essence and just evolve it all the way to 2010. Her urban casuality in the form of oversized tshirts, hoodies and leggings have made this look wearable for the masses. Have a look at this old video she released when she first came out....you got to love multiple outfit changes! Then we have 'Editorial M.I.A' or 'Fashion M.I.A', you can see her in edgier magazine spreads for the likes of DAZED, I.D, Trace and her Marc Jacobs campaign. Obviously she is a beautiful girl but I find something extra special about her, she has the ability to adorn the most high fashion pieces, and along with the photographer produce an image that is more 'Art' than a typical fashion spread. I really like looking at her photoshoots, they undoubtably influence me when designing for Bamboo but even personally, I accredit the majority of my oversized tropical island tourist tees to her. She also just had a baby last year and I remember the commotion her red carpet outfit to the Grammys created, over 8 months pregnant and wearing skin tight mesh...she totally got slack for it, but I thought it was fun. She can leave looking glamourous to Beyonce!
I have had the pleasure of seeing her a few times just out and about in London, live at the Reading Festival and when I was in Brooklyn a few years back and she dresses so fearlessly even when just roaming the streets. Her stage costumes always impress with masses of neon, metallic spandex and the odd feather now and then. She is an ultimate performer, putting on a show in every sense, not just audible with the fantastic beats, samples and politically infused lyrics but visually stimulates too. I will end with a few images that pretty much represent her style and cover her many years out as a popular performer (images: Google images.) There is no doubt that Miss M.I.A would be an awesome model for The Bamboo District...we can always dream. Pull out the album, blow the dust off and take a look at history. Your history. I get a real joy out of looking at old Photographs but I guess they are a novelty now since the boom of the digital camera. However, my last batch of prints were probably when I was around 15 and they all depict an awkward me, with an interesting pink fringe and a love of wide criminal damage jeans. Don't laugh...I know you all had a pair. So I guess I will lock those snaps away for a good number of years until I can claim them as 'Vintage', and then everyone will think dressing like a member of the band All Saints was all the rage. I came across some old photos including a few taken in the 30s when my Grandparents on my Papa's side got married. I heart sun faded sepia and black and white shots. Check out the hair and clothes, they have that Casablanca vibe. My favourite is the last picture of my Grandpapa basically looking like a G, staring at the camera knowing he just bagged himself a hot wifey. What I also love is how you can see the trends of the past being reflected in the trends of present times. These following images show the classic 60s beehive a la Hairspray/Amy Winehouse, and also how the clothes of school children in 50s Philippines could easily be included in an American Apparel collection. Check out those high waisted circle mini skirts!!! So let's not let the printed photo die! Let's start the photo scrapbook revival or even better, send a loved one photo in the post. Yes, the Post...not email.
